Kumano Kodo Guides is an English speaking, outdoor and cultural tour operator that began as an offshoot to its much larger parent company, Japan Guides Group.
Japan's traditions and culture stems from its nature- worshipping religions making a hiking trip the best vehicle to explore a deeper experience into our fascinating country.
The Kumano region is rich in spirituality and history, and for that reason we keep our guiding operation intimate to ensure that we provide you with the most meaningful, educational and culturally immersive experience during your stay.
Our professional outdoor guides are all bilingual speakers, have a deep connection, appreciation for and understanding of Japanese culture, language and history. We focus on the crossover between Japan's outdoors, history and culture because we want to share an experience unique to Japan. Most of our trips occur in rural/remote locations but are some of our favorite areas of Japan - away from the crowds, steeped in nature and sustained through the generosity of those we meet along the way.
We take safety seriously. The wilderness rescue system can be tricky to navigate nor is it available at the same capacity as many western states. Though our guides are very knowledgeable on Japan subjects, we are outdoor guides and all of our guides are certified as Wilderness First Responders (or similar) and trained in CPR.
All Japan Guides Group products, Kumano Kodo Guides is committed to preserving the natural environment of Japan. Each year, with an increasing number of visitors to Japan's outdoors, outdoor ethics are more important than ever. All employees and guests of our tours practice Leave No Trace principles to ensure the sustainability of the environment we like to work and play in.
To provide our guests with a culturally immersive, fun, unique and meaningful Japan experience.

For the last decade, Moto has been a professional in the outdoor industry after being exposed to the mountains during his travels to the Himalayas in his early 20s.
Though born and raised in Saitama, Japan, his love for the outdoors has taken him abroad to work as a guide in places such as the great walks of New Zealand.
Moto's experience spans from guiding on Mt Fuji (Japan's tallest peak) and some of the country's toughest summits to mountain safety as a ski patroller in the Japanese Northern Alps.
Not only mountains! Moto has lived in places like Kyoto and Matsumoto deepening his appreciation and understanding of his own country's culture.
Keep exploring! As he always says "you never know until you get there".
